Michigan RV Tax Credits

Michigan Joins in Offering Tax Credits on RV Trade-Ins

Imagine sitting around a warm comforting campfire with friends and family with your new RV.  The summer heat as subsided into the night. The sounds of children laughing, ghost stories being told, and roasting of marshmallows fills the air.  It seems like nothing could be better.

Now imagine yourself in this same scenario but with a little bit more cash in your pocket, life really did just get that much better. Thanks to the Michigan Association of Recreation Vehicles and Campgrounds (MARVAC) and the Michigan Auto Dealers Association (MADA) you can experience just that.  It’s called sales tax on the difference, Public ACT 159 and 160, which offers a tax credit up to $2,000 on a trade-in of a used RV. That tax credit amount will increase by $500 each year beginning in 2015. The idea is pretty simple…  Say you own a RV and you are looking to purchase a newer model worth $10,000. The dealer tells you your trade-in, which is your current RV, is worth $2,000.  Subtract the $2,000 of your trade-in value from the $10,000 of the newer RV and you will only pay sales tax on that $8,000 difference. “The MADA did a lot of the heavy lobbying,” said Bill Sheffer, The Director of MARVAC. “We went along with them [MADA]. We hit hard for the past two years, lining up legislators and convincing the governor there is a way to not lose revenues.” With Michigan being only one of six states that did not offer the tax incentive, many RV buyers were heading to states that did offer the tax incentive. Sheffer predicts the stimulation in sales will make up the difference in the lost revenues.  “What our industry is going to see is less migration out of our state,” explains Sheffer.  “They will be buying units here [due to the new tax incentive in Michigan]. I’m hoping that will happen.”  Purchasing a new RV now will enable you to enjoy the warm weather and sun of the summer
